Still ignorant of the problem, I tried to open a terminal window and only got a small box with a red dot. So that, under "All Fonts" there are no fonts and the same for user and computer. I went to Font Book and somehow managed to remove my fonts. After installing Office 08 on my machine, my fonts were messed up.
